Eco's new "it"

So the girls Gabby and Emma, creators of Gem Bows, were awesome enough TO LET ME INTERVIEW THEM! When they said yes, i literally freaked out! They were in Teen Vogue, and now i was getting to ask them questions?! That was THE coolest thing ever.

Before you read the interview, these girls are amazing. Aside from the art and style, these bows really help alot! Their mission is a great one and i feel proud to say i live in a world that has girls/children my age who care about the planet. So, here it is!

When did you girls decide to start the project? And why?
-We started the project last April, when we were just discovering colored duct tape at a local craft store. Gabby had some tape in her locker one day at school, which lead us to playing with it during a study hall. We thought of the idea of bows and made like 10. We wore two of them and gave the rest to friends. That weekend, we decided we could sell them for a charity, and since we were both very interested in the environment, we chose the We Campaign as the charity.

How has the response been from fellow students and other people?
- Our friends have been very supportive, some have helped us make them and sell them, and the response has been great. People have been inspired with the idea, and a lot of people were very interested with our charity, because not many people know much about it. People in our school wear the bows to school.

I heard that you went to fashion week. How was it?
-We did go to fashion week in Feb. '09. It was great! We saw Miss Sixty, Erin Featherson, Lela Rose, and Preen. Many people love the bows and took our pictures in them!

What is your ultimate goal?
-We don't have a real ultimate goal, I guess just to help raise more awareness in the We Campaign has always been a goal of ours, and now that we have raised $1,000+ for We, I think we just want to keep it up!

If you could give any advice to someone who wants to start an eco-friendly project/business what would it be?
-Anyone who wants to start and eco-friendly business should know it is extremely rewarding, no matter the amount of work it may be. Also, do some research on your ideas, and the materials you use to lessen your environmental impact. Get your friends involved and try to raise as much awareness as you can, that's the important part.

Do you plan to ever expand into selling other types of earth friendly products?
-We have never considered selling other products, it may be something we do in the future!

What is your favorite fashion magazine to read?
-We love Teen Vogue because of its mix of high fashion and affordable prices, and for how it also cares about the environment!
